Course/Module description:
The course “Introduction to Victimology and Penology” is part of the theoretical foundation for BA students in Criminology. The course examines crime victims and patterns of punishment as complementary aspects of the criminal justice system, and explores their contributions to social perceptions of crime and justice.

Course/Module aims:
• To master familiarity with basic terms in Victimology and penology
• To encourage critical thinking on crime victims’ place in the justice system
• To understand historical trends in punishment, in and outside the community context
• To gain thorough knowledge on the Israeli Criminal justice system
• To explore alternative approaches to victimisation and punishment

Learning outcomes - On successful completion of this module, students should be able to:
1. Explain the main concepts of victimisation and penology, and describe their trends in criminal justice.
2. Describe historical developments in penology, with regards to the reasons for punishment.
3. Examine victimisation and punishment as complimentary aspects of the criminal process, and their reciprocal effect on social perceptions.
4. Critically asses the role of victims and punishment in the Israeli justice system, and explore possible alternatives.
