Course/Module description:
In recent decades, and especially since the events of September 11, 2001, terrorism has received a significant research boost. Political and public interest in the issue increased markedly, particularly due to the global scale of the phenomenon and the large number of fatalities and casualties. The course will present a general background of the main issues pertaining to terrorism: the definition of terrorism, history of terrorism, politics of terrorist organizations and causes of terrorism such as globalization, poverty and religion. Topics such as terrorist financing, fighting terrorism and the dilemmas involved will also be discussed. Several lessons will be dedicated to analyzing current terrorist incidents.

Learning outcomes - On successful completion of this module, students should be able to:
• Think critically about the key aspects of terrorism.
• Understand the complexity of the definition of terrorism and the nature of the phenomenon.
• Demonstrate knowledge about major trends in the world of terrorism.
• Display in-depth knowledge about the causes of terrorism.
• Demonstrate familiarity with the tools for coping with terrorist organizations as well as their limitations.
