Course/Module description:
Why are women underrepresented in national parliaments and top leadership roles? Does numerical representation of women in parliament lead to substantive representation as well? How does the labor market influence gender differences in political preferences? In what ways does gender inequality manifest in the services provided by the state to its residents? And do divorce rates affect voting behavior? These are just some of the questions we will seek to answer during the course.

We will focus on several arenas: the state, the labor market, the political system, and the family, and we will ask how power is gendered in each of these areas. In 2024, women and men still do not have equal standing in the political, social, and economic arenas. To understand this, we will sometimes venture beyond traditional political science boundaries and examine how cultural, social, and economic messages and symbols affect women (and men).

The topics covered in the course will include: gender stereotypes, substantive and descriptive representation of women in politics, gender gaps in candidacy for positions, disparities in bargaining power between women and men within households, gendered division of labor at home, occupational segregation, representation gaps, and gender voting disparities.

Course/Module aims:

Learning outcomes - On successful completion of this module, students should be able to:
- Describe the current state of gender gaps in politics, within households, and in the workplace
- Assess the efficacy (advantages and limitations) of various methods of closing these gender gaps
- Develop their own perspectives of what we know and don’t know yet about the causes, consequences, and proposed solutions to gender inequality, and debate these with peers - present a study in class on the subject and give feedback to peers on their presebtations
