Course/Module description:
Following the assassination of Israeli Prime Minister Itzhak Rabin, an assumption was raised that the Israeli society entered a period of a "cultural struggle" between two sides, which continually drew more distant from each other. According to this assumption, this conflict is based not only on a deep ideological divide, but is rather the result of the creation of two subcultures, each with a different value base, that is struggling for hegemony over the Jewish society in Israel. This assumption was intensified during the Israeli withdrawal from Gush Katif and the Gaza strip, particularly as a result of the strong rejection to this political move. The course will attempt to examine the roots of this cultural gap, from the early days of the Zionist movement until the current time.
