Course/Module description:
In this course we will examine how attributes, factors and processes influence the military’s relationship with civil society and its leadership during routine and warring times. Using a comparative analysis of Israeli, American and other case studies, we will discuss topics such as: the civilian oversight of the military by the state and non-state actors; the means a conscription-based military, as opposed to an all-volunteer military, influences civil-military relations; and the way in which the military communicates with the media.
Course/Module aims:
An examination of the attributes, factors and processes that shape the relationship between civil society and its leadership with the military using a comparative analysis of Israeli, American and other case studies.
Learning outcomes - On successful completion of this module, students should be able to:
• Analyze how the attributes, factors and processes impact the relationship between civil society and its leadership and the military during routine and warring times.
• Examine the military’s influence on the civilian leadership in Israel, the United States and other countries.
• To present the means of which there is civilian control of the military
• To assess the way in which a conscription-based military, as opposed to an all-volunteer military, influences civil-military relations.
• To discuss how the military communicates with the media.
