Course/Module description:
The course will follow the development of Marx’s social and political thought by studying selected writings from his early period, including those which have not being published in his lifetime. This will point out how Marx reached his radical conclusions by way of a critical acceptance of Hegel’s thought by pointing out its internal tensions and its inability to live up to its own criteria as explicating historical reality. The texts discussed will include “The Critique of Hegel’s Philosophy of Right”, “On the Jewish Question”. “The Economic-Philosophical Manuscripts”, “The German Ideology” and “The Communist Manifesto”. It will be discussed how this intellectual journey leads Marx to the conclusion that “Philosophers until now have only interpreted the world, but the point is to change it” – moving from social criticism to revolutionary activity.
