Course/Module description:
Introduction to statistics course for business administration and accounting students; The main topics are: Probability - axioms and properties of probability function; Combinations and permutations; Discrete random variables; Important discrete distributions; Joint probability distribution, Descriptive Statistics.

Course/Module aims:
To provide a basic knowledge in probability and preparing the students to the advance course in Statistical inference.

Learning outcomes - On successful completion of this module, students should be able to:
1.Basic concepts in probability.
2.Quantitative tools enabling them to solve problems and assist them in decision making.
3.Fundamental abilities to estimate risks.
4.Basic tools for dealing with situations of uncertainty.
5.Means of presenting, interpreting and analyzing quantitative data.

Teaching arrangement and method of instruction: lecture exercises

Course/Module Content:
Introduction to statistics; Events and their relationships: union and intersection, relationships between events, Van diagram; Probability - axioms and properties of probability function; Sample space having equally likely outcomes, combinations and permutations; Conditional probability: multiplication rule, independent events, total probability law, Bayes' theorem; Discrete random variables: expected value, variance and standard deviation; Important discrete distributions: the Uniform distribution, the Bernoulli and Binomial distributions the Geometric distribution and the Poisson distribution; Joint probability distribution, covariance and Pearson correlation coefficient; Descriptive Statistics: summarizing and organizing data in tables and graphs, measure of central tendency - mean, median and mode, measure of variation and standard deviation; Simple linear regression.
