Course/Module description:
We will explore the relations between Scandinavia (Denmark, Sweden and Norway) and Israel during late 1940s and along the 1950s. First, some core values underlying the 'Nordic model' will be introduced - among others stateness, equality, human capital, social solidarity and modernism - and the way these values evolved into political policies during the 20th century (that Scandinavian Jewry fared relatively better off in the Holocaust - in Denmark and Sweden more so than in Norway - is a primary indicator of this process). Then, the positive relations that developed between the young Israeli state and the three Northern countries will be analyzed, with emphasis on the close contacts that linked the contemporary ruling social-democratic parties in Scandinavia with Mapa"i. The similar political vision, in addition to the integration of interests at the outset of the Cold War, made the Scandinavian countries loyal and devoted allies of Israel during its first decade of existence.

- Demonstrate solid as well as innovative knowledge on the Northern countries – a unique region of Europe.
- Critically evaluate past events.
- Reflect on long-term historical processes.

- Conduct independent research, based on a critical analysis of a variety of sources.
