Course/Module description:
This course provides an in-depth examination of the complex and evolving relationship between Germany and Israel. It explores the historical, political, and societal dimensions of this relationship, from the aftermath of World War II to the present day. Through a multidisciplinary approach, students will gain a comprehensive understanding of the factors that have shaped German-Israeli relations, including the Holocaust, international diplomacy, economic cooperation, and cultural exchange. By analyzing key events, policies, and mutual perceptions, students will critically assess the dynamics of this “special” bilateral relationship.
Course/Module aims:
1. Understand the historical context and key events that have shaped German-Israeli relations.
2. Analyze the political dynamics of German-Israeli relations, including diplomatic exchanges and policy decisions.
3. Explore the economic cooperation between Germany and Israel and its impact on the bilateral relationship.
4. Examine the cultural exchange and cooperation between Germany and Israel in the fields of arts, literature, and film.
5. Assess the challenges and opportunities for German-Israeli relations in the contemporary global context.
6. Develop critical thinking skills and the ability to analyze and interpret primary and secondary sources related to German-Israeli relations.
7. Enhance written and oral communication skills through class discussions, presentations, and written assignments.
