Course/Module description:
In this scholarly tour, we will explore the enduring, entangled engagements of Germans with Sicily and Southern Italy. We will visit and learn about the German presence of medieval times, especially the impact of the Hohenstaufen dynasty from the twelfth and until the fourteenth centuries. Indeed, as we shall see, the dynasty’s kings: Henri IV, Frederick II, etc. left a dramatic impact on the largest Island of the Mediterranean. We will also explore in depth the fascination of German romanticists with Sicily and Southern Italy, delving into the romantic admiration of figures such as Goethe with the Island’s rich Greek and Roman pasts.
