Course/Module description:
The course addresses key concepts, methodological approaches, and epistemological and ethical issues in cultural studies. 1) The first part of the course discusses the intellectual history of cultural studies (in neo-Marxist traditions and in the Birmingham school). 2) The second part reviews methodological strategies in the study of culture, focusing on various methods of interpretative explorations (discourse analysis, content analysis, semiotic analysis, interviews and others). (3) The Third part discusses the application of these methods in research design, focusing on the integration of subject and aims of the study, research questions, data collection process, and data analysis.
Course/Module aims:
1) To introduce students with concepts, approaches, and dilemmas related to core methodologies in cultural studies. 2) to provide students with basic theoretical and methodological tools for a critical 'culture study'
Learning outcomes - On successful completion of this module, students should be able to:
1) articulate their own research project, based on critical traditions in the study of culture, 2) define research objectives and questions and select the appropriate methodological tools, 3) collect and analyze qualitative data
