תאור כללי של הקורס:
קורס זה בוחן את חייו של האסיר הפוליטי הדרום אפריקני שהפך לנשיא הדמוקרטי הראשון של דרום אפריקה, נלסון מנדלה. הקורס בוחן את תרומתו ההיסטורית של מנדלה לגיוס מחאה שחורה בדרום אפריקה נגד הדיכוי הגובר של משטר האפרטהייד, ותוך כדי שואל שאלות על לאומיות פוסט-קולוניאלית ועל התנגדות דמוקרטית המונית. נעסוק במעמדו של מנדלה כ"איש החוק"כפי שציין ז'אק דרידה (1986) בהקשר של משפט הבגידה ומשפט ריבניה בסוף שנות החמישים ותחילת שנות השישים. מעמדה של האוטוביוגרפיה של מנדלה תבדק במסגרת ספרות של אסירים, תוך הצטטלבןת בין האוטוביוגרפיה של אשתו, ויני מאדיקליזלה מנדלה, כמו גם טקסטים ספרותיים כמו הרומן המטאפיקטיווי של הסופר הדרום אפריקני "קריאתו של ויני מנדלה" (2004). נדון בקורפוס רחב של ייצוגים תרבותיים פופולריים של חיי מנדלה בקולנוע, בתרבות פופולרות, בשירה ובמוסיקה. לבסוף, הקורס יחקור את מה שהמבקרת שרה נוטל כינתה "תמותה של מנדלה", כמו גם את תפיסתו וזכרונותיו בזירה הציבורית העולמית לאחר מותו.

מטרות הקורס:
למקם את מנדלה ביחס לפילוסופיה הפוליטית המערבית והמקומית.
להבין את המאבק נגד האפרטהייד על רקע הדיקולוניזציה ולאור כתביו של פרנץ פאנון.
להציב את מנדלה ביחס להיבטים התרבותיים של המאבק נגד האפרטהייד.
לחקור את המורשת המתמשכת של נלסון מנדלה לאחר מותו בשנת 2013.

תוצרי למידה :
בסיומו של קורס זה, סטודנטים יהיו מסוגלים:
לעסוק באופן ביקורתי בביוגרפיה של נלסון מנדלה.
לזהות רעיונות מרכזיים למחשבה המדינית של מנדלה.
להעריך את תפקידה של מנדלה כסמל תרבותי.
