Course/Module description:
Marcel Mauss (1872-1950) remains in the shadow of his uncle, Emile Durkheim, father of French Sociology, and of Claude Lévi-Strauss, father of French structuralism, in this course we will discover his work for its own merits. We will read and study his essay on the gift (1925), his general theory of magic (1904), his text on the category of the person and the notion of the self (1938) as well as the techniques of the body (1935), but also his text on the nature and function of sacrifice (1899) on prayer (1909) or on the notion of money (1914) and other insightful texts. The work of Mauss is characterized by a vast array of topics, such a rich and eclectic array is also the source of a unique methodology.
