Course/Module description:
The course explores the complexity and relativity of concepts of gender and sexuality, as defined and preformed in different socio-cultural contexts, with emphasis on Israel.
The basic assumption of the course is that gender identities are constructed by cultural discourses and practices, that vary across societies and historical periods. These constructions define hierarchical and oppressive social relations, first and foremost between men and women, but also between groups of men or between groups of women, as well as between national and ethnic groups.
We will read formative feminist, post-colonial, homo-lesbian and queer texts. These texts present critical strategies and concepts that expose and dismantle oppressive constructions of gender and sexuality, while shaping novel modes of gender consciousness. We will examine these texts in their historical and philosophical background. Our discussion will point out advantages and disadvantages of the use of these concepts in analysis of cultural practices, discourses and artworks. We will analyze works that pose challenge to oppressive concepts of femininity, masculinity, heterosexuality, homosexuality, parental and familial structures, psychosexual development, etc. Our emphasis will be on understanding constructions of gender and sexuality in Israel, in light of these works and concepts.

Course/Module aims:

Studying formative texts, thinkers and concepts in the field of gender studies in various disciplines.
Acquiring critical tools for analysis of oppressive constructions of gender and sexuality, in various discourses and artworks.
Surveying creative practices that pose challenges and undermine oppressive constructions of gender and sexuality, while shaping novel modes of gender consciousness.
Assessing the advantages and disadvantages of the use of these concepts in analysis
of cultural discourses, arts, performances and practices, in Israel.

Learning outcomes - On successful completion of this module, students should be able to:
Formulate and explain critical core concepts in the field of gender studies.
Discern and compare major positions in regard to controversial issues in the field of gender studies.
Apply critical concepts and methods to the analysis of various cultural manifestations.
Critically analyze oppressive constructions of gender and sexuality in texts and works in various disciplines.
Discern and analyze oppressive constructions of gender and sexuality in the students lived experience.
Describe and explain the interrelation of gender, race, ethnicity, nationality, social status etc.
Apply critical concepts and methods to the analysis constructions of gender and sexuality in Israel.
Analyze (and maybe create) practices that pose challenges and undermine oppressive constructions of gender and sexuality

Lesbian & gay studies, and Queer theory
Gender, Postcolonialism, and Multicultural feminism; The politics of identity; , Mizrahi (Oriental) feminism; Palestinian women in Israel.
Israeli masculinities: The zionist body; Mizrahi (Oriental) masculinities; Palestinian masculinities.
