Course/Module description:
This course will focus on critical analysis of the relationships between environment, agriculture, science and society. During the course we will consider a variety of theories and case studies in social research on the relations between the environment and society, and their political meanings. We will analyze various concepts such as open spaces, sustainable development, organic agriculture, invasive species, etc., and examine how they can help understand current environmental and social issues in Israel and around the world. Some of the questions that the course will address are: How do we use nature in national, religious, economic, and political conflicts? What do we mean when we talk about nature and anything that is 'natural'? How do different groups interpret the relationship between the environment and society? What is the social significance of the distinction between nature and culture, how can we understand negotiations over this distinction? Most of the course will be based on anthropological reading materials, but will also include materials from fields such as geography, environmental studies, history, science and technology studies, and more.

Course/Module aims:
To expose students to the power relations in the environment-society relations, and to the diversity of perceptions and worldview of different groups and cultures towards nature and environment
