Course/Module description:
The course focuses on anthropological research of the Palestinian society through ethnographic writing. We will discuss the Palestinian society in the homeland (inside Israel, the West Bank, Gaza Strip) and in the diaspora (in the Arab world, and beyond). The course will offer a hysterical overview of both the development of ethnographic writing and processes that took place in Palestinian society. However, the emphasis will be primarily on current research, while critically reading texts written about Palestinians or by them. The course primary topics are divided between various social groups and key issues in the study of Palestinian society. We will raise questions about the politics of representation of Palestinian society in anthropological research, about the topics that were covered by researchers and others who have not received adequate attention, and about the correspondence of anthropological research on the Palestinians with broader theoretical issues and fields of research in anthropology.
Course/Module aims:
The aim of the course is to expose the students to the complexity of Palestinian society through anthropological research, and to develop tools for analytical and critical reading of ethnographic texts.
