Course/Module description:
How are "disease" and "health" defined in different cultures? What does care, recovery, and quality of life mean in different places in the world, and in different situations? How does gender, ethnic and class inequality affect all of these? And how does our cultural affiliation, political power relations, and historical processes affect our approach to moral questions concerning health, such as which patients should be prioritized in providing urgent care or is it moral to choose to whom we will not donate a kidney?
In this course, we will touch on these questions, which are part of the fundamental questions of medical anthropology. Through them we will seek to break down concepts that may have been taken for granted regarding health and illness, treatment and recovery. The course is divided into three units: (1) basic concepts in medical anthropology, (2) health in a social context, (3) the moral economy of health

Learning outcomes - On successful completion of this module, students should be able to:
Upon completion of this course, students will be able to:
1. Understand the distinction between disease and illness and discuss its practical and theoretical implications.
2. Observe processes of medicalization and de-medicalization in society, and discuss the social dynamics accompanying these processes in an informed manner.
3. Point to the various ways in which such social dynamics as gender, ethnicity, class etc. influence medical knowledge, medical practice and patient behavior.
4. Make accurate and educated use of the range of terms and concepts frequently used in the field of medical anthropology.
5. Critically and persuasively analyze various medically-related phenomena from a medical-anthropological perspective.
