Course/Module description:
The course will introduce the students with the family, which has served as a substantial framework over history, where social, cultural and identity-related changes have taken place. The family institution has undergone processes of change through the years, which are related to external influences from many contexts: environment, culture, geo-politics and inter-community. The course will discuss and analyze these changes through examination of rituals and patterns which are related to family life, such as marriage, divorce, matchmaking, children, size, work-family balance, birth, death, immigration, gender, old age, adoption, families with single parents as well as others. Based on the reading material, the assignments and discussions, we will review the various methodological tools for social studies of the family, emphasizing on qualitative research. These discussions will serve as basis to the study assignments, which will be performed by each student. Each assignment will focus on analysis of a specific experience/event/research field, independent management of research and handing a seminary assignment, which includes description, analysis and explanation of the chosen phenomenon. In order to assist and promote the personal assignments of the students, the course will also include personal meetings, class discussions on each assignments, peer work, and work in small groups
