Course/Module description:
This course covers the key psychoanalytic ideas as they developed during the twentieth century.
The course discusses how major psychoanalysts (Freud, Jung, Erikson, Mahler, Klein, Winnicott, Kohut and others) have suggested us to understand the subject, the difficulties he approaches as essential part of his life, and the appropriate way to help him. During the course we will clarify the internal connection between theoretical concepts and therapeutic work with reference to examples. We will discuss also what is essential to psychoanalytic theory and what differentiate it from other therapeutic approaches, such as cognitive, behavioral and existential psychotherapies

Course/Module aims:
1. Understanding the key psychoanalytic ideas
2. Understanding the relationship between psychoanalytic ideas and practice
3. Understanding the difference between psychoanalytic theories and other “competing”therapies.

Learning outcomes - On successful completion of this module, students should be able to:
1. to explain what are the essential points of each psychoanalytic theory
2. to distinguish between different psychoanalytic theories
3. to explain what is essential to the any psychoanalytic theory by of comparing them to other therapeutic theories

Introduction: the nature of psychoanalytic theory and its place in scientific discourse
Freud:
The Seduction Theory: Trauma and its effect on the mind
The Drive model/ topographical model - conscious versus unconscious
The structural model: id, ego and super-ego (object relations).
Sexuality and its impact on personality structure
Therapeutic technique
Jung:
Pesonality as an expression of archetypes and therapy as integration of opposites.
Klein:
Effective Thinking as the melting pot of personality
The connection between thinking and the body
Winnicott:
True self versus false self
Ericsson, Mahler:
The effect of external reality on the individual
Kohut:
Healthy narcissism
Psychoanalysis versus other therapeutic approaches:
The unconscious: Freudian versus cognitive behavioral approach
Hermeneutics of suspicion versus hermeneutics of trust - between psychoanalytic approach and Humanistic approaches.
