Course/Module description:
The course examines ways of constructing and representing gender identity through language. Texts from interpersonal and mass media will be used for understanding the dynamics of power relation and cultural differences.

Course/Module aims:
The course critically examines different approaches to the issue of gender differences, arising from culture or nature. A variety of texts – conversations, letters, group discussion, literary and visual text will be the basis for insights about the role of language in defining gender identity.

Learning outcomes - On successful completion of this module, students should be able to:
The course will train students to
(1) Identify gender elements in language use.
(2) Examine the choice of discourse strategies related to gender and culture.
(3) Collect and classify contextual constraints.
(4) Compare discursive strategies within same speech communities.
(5) Evaluate the effect of gender on the performance of identity

Teaching arrangement and method of instruction: lectures and discussions. Students are required to present in class their research based on analysis of data collected.
