Course/Module description:
The course will focus on the interrelationships between the media and the issue and social diversity from a gender perspective. We will examine various aspects of self-representation in social media and institutional media, and we will ask questions relating to issues such as identity politics, political correctness, hashtag activism, exclusion, agenda setting, partial and under-representation, stereotyping, intersectionality, silence, Media representations of violence against women, ethnicity, gender and status and more. We will refer to various contemporary test cases, prominent cases of gender violence in the public discourse, social protests, women and men in politics and more. We will refer to and analyze (based on academic articles) various media texts throughout the course such as: reality shows, advertisements, tweets, Facebook posts, Instagram photos, newspaper articles, satire programs, broadcast articles, comments (talkbacks) and more.
Course/Module aims:
1. To gain insights into social representation in media.
2. To examine different modes of representation in traditional media and social network.
3. To analyze local cases in view of other events, considering the specific group and the Israeli culture.
Learning outcomes - On successful completion of this module, students should be able to:
1. Identity construction on different axis – gender, religion, ethnic, national.
2. Basic terminology: politics of identity, pollical correctness, hashtag activism, exclusion, agenda setting, partial and mis-representation, stereotypes, cross sectionally, silencing, voice.
3. Conducting and presenting a case study based on academic studies.

Teaching arrangement and method of instruction:
Learning is based on discussion of case studies based on methodological and theoretical studies.
Use of visual texts of events or artistic performances. Materials will be available to students ahead of time in order to allow meaningful discussions. Topics chosen by students will be the basis of the course schedule. In online course the number of topics will be minimize in order to focus.

Initial range of topics, according to students’ choice:
Gender: non-binary continuum; masculinity; egalitarian language; representation and performance; gender violence.
Religiosity: representation in popular culture; the worlds of learning and study; haredi cinema; safe environments (e.g., internet).
Ethnicity: Mizrahi-Ashkenazi families; Arab Jews; ‘arsim and frehot; poetics of identity; migrants and refugees.
Nationality: Linguistic policies; Jerusalem as challenging space; linguistic landscape; authenticity and appropriation (e.g., hummus).

Additional information:
Course requirements and grade structure
1. Attendance and participation, 15% of the final grade.
Participation includes discussions during class or alternatively comments in the forum.
2. Research work that will be submitted in two different stages:
2.1. Choosing a topic for research. Submitting a topic for approval counts for 5%.
2.2. Course summary work to be submitted by August 25. 80% of the final grade.
No final work will be accepted without the preliminary stage of approval of the research topic by the lecturer.
For the benefit of seminar work - (must be confirmed with the lecturer by the second lesson).
Writers of seminar papers are also required to submit a summary paper in the course - with the coordination and approval of the lecturer.
A seminar paper will be 20-25 pages in length, will analyze a phenomenon and its representation in the media while basing itself on 20 academic sources (at least). At least half of them will be current, from 2014 onwards.
Seminar work earns 4 credits in addition to the two credits of the course itself.
