Course/Module description:
The first part of the course will focus on introduction to research methods in the social sciences and to learning the basic functions of SPSS. The second part will focus on quantitative research methods in communication and on practicing more advanced statistical functions in SPSS.
Course/Module aims:
The course is designed to provide students with knowledge on major research methods in the social sciences and to give them basic tools for planning and conducting quantitative research in communication.
Learning outcomes - On successful completion of this module, students should be able to:
1. Define the basic concepts of the scientific inquiry, with emphasis on research in the social sciences.
2. Specify the basic ways to collect and analyze data in the social sciences.
3. Describe the essential qualitative research methods in communication studies.
4. Perform basic statistical functions in SPSS, e.g. correlation coefficients, significance tests and linear regression.
5. Discuss the basic concepts of scientific inquiry such as validity, reliability and sampling.
6. Describe the importance of collecting data using proven and agreed upon methods.

Teaching arrangement and method of instruction:
Each week there will be a class lecture, in which we will discuss methodological issues in the social sciences in general, and in communication research in particular. The lecture will be followed by two hours of practice in class.
