Course/Module description:
The course will introduce the student to incorporating environmental considerations in land use planning and national infrastructures and to where priority is given to the protection of open space. It will introduce the concepts of environmental protection and of sustainable development as they relate to resource management and wellbeing in national, regional and local planning. The course will include an overview of the planning system and the tools which it offers for achieving more sustainable development, with particular attention to environmental impact assessment. Lectures will be devoted to specific development sectors including: the urban environment, transport, energy, industry and mineral extraction and to the management of natural resources including: ecological services, landscapes, coasts and the marine environment.

To understand the principles and ways which can make development sustainable
To review current and future planning and development in Israel in relation to internationally accepted environmental considerations
Learning outcomes - On successful completion of this module, students should be able to:
identify environmental issues relevant to spatial planning
integrate policies for incorporating environmental aspects into masterplans and development proposals
assess the environmental impacts and consequences of development proposals
recommend how to manage environmental conflicts relating to development policies and proposals
