Course/Module description:
In this course the students will learn to read a number of types of Pre-Modern Japanese sources. Students will learn Classical Japanese, and how to read Kambun (Sino-Japanese). We will also study the various types of sources, how to find them, and how to evaluate them.

Course/Module aims:

Learning outcomes - On successful completion of this module, students should be able to:
1. To understand Classical Japanese, its grammar, and how it differs from the modern language.
2. To understand Kambun (Sino-Japanese), its grammar, and its variety.
3. To critically examine several different types of sources.
4. To translate Pre-Modern Japanese sources to modern Japanese and Hebrew (or whatever their native language is).
5. To use primary sources in their research.

Attendance requirements(%):
Attendance mandatory, 80%
