Course/Module description:
This course is aimed at studying in depth, discussing and understanding the processes that caused Japan's military and civilian leaders in the 1930's and early 1940's to embark on a hopeless war against the United States. Japan's social and political structures will be examined, her view of her place in the regional and international framework and the military and diplomatic moves that drove Japan to attack America in Pearl Harbor. The course will also deal with the military and diplomatic moves during the Pacific War and an effort will be undertaken to understand the main causes that led to Japan's defeat.

The aim of the course is to understand why the leaders of Japan, caused deterioration in the country to war against the United States knowing that they had no chance to defeat this superpower. The course deals with their assumptions and their policies in the years 1937-1941 and their policies during the Pacific War.
