Course/Module description:
Classes focus on the following themes:
- Buddhism and Buddhist art
- Arts of the imperial court
- Zen and minimalism in art
- Painting and architecture under the samurai rule
- "Western influence" during the early modern period
- Ukiyo-e
- Contemporary art
Classes are expected to take place in zoom. Before each class, students are requested to read a bibliographic item (mostly in English), watch video clips, and surf through related sites.
A quiz (in moodle) would be held to summarize each theme.


Course/Module aims:
The course aims at broadening the horizons of Israeli students towards global culture and literacy.
The students would learn basic terms from 2 fields: Japanese culture and history of art. Namely, Japanese culture would be taught through detailed studies of artworks. We would also refer to Japanese references in contemporary popular culture.

Learning outcomes - On successful completion of this module, students should be able to:
When approaching a Japanese artwork or a reference to Japanese culture (in a museum, book, anime, or computer game), you would be able to draw further connections to cultural and visual contexts.
You would receive basic tools to continue independent study in this field. Additionally, the course would give basic tools of visual orientation (how to approach an artwork, what to ask yourself in order to gain a profound visual experience).

100%

Teaching arrangement and method of instruction: Concurrently, classes are planed to take place in zoom. Students are required to read or collect materials from the web before classes.
There would be short moodle quizes.

Attendance -10% (zoom)
Quizzes - 20% (out of 5 quizzes, 4 best marks are considered).
FINAL Exam - 70%
