Course/Module description:
“The unification of Italy between 1859 and 1861 was a great victory for European nationalism. To many contemporaries, the formation of an Italian nation-state seemed proof that the future of Europe lay with nations, while the largely unexpected, highly dramatic events of 1859 and 1860 tied nationalism in Italy forever to a heroic sense of collective revival and
resurrection (‘Risorgimento’). For William Gladstone, Italian unification ‘was the most stupendous fabric that had ever been erected on the basis of human integrity in any age or country of the world’”*. Inquiring into the story of Italy’s national revival as the foundaional myth for the new state, and as the centrepiece of an official cult of memory designed to give Italians the sense of a common past and present identity, the course aims to analyse the construction of modern Italy as a geographical, political-cultural, social, and linguistic concept from along three main temporal trajectories: the Risorgimento, Fascism, and the Italian Republic, through the categories of nation, nationality, and nationalism. At the center of the discussions on the making of Italy will be scrutinized: primary sources, historical events, historiographic debates, movies, and operas.
