Course/Module description:
A general survey of the Phoenician civilization in the Levant and around the Mediterranean, from its beginning in the early Iron Age to the Persian period.

Course/Module aims:
To acquaint the student with the Phoenician culture, the main sites, the main categories of material culture (architecture, ceramics, artwork, inscriptions etc.) and attributes of daily life, death, religion, politics, economy and administration—as they appear in archaeological record.

Learning outcomes - On successful completion of this module, students should be able to:
• Engage with the main debates of Phoenician studies.
• Identify Phoenician attributes in the main categories of material culture.
• Be familiar with the main Phoenician sites in the Levant, as well as their main regions of settlement around the Mediterranean.

80%

Teaching arrangement and method of instruction: The course consists of 14 1.5 hr. lectures (in Zoom).
