Course/Module description:
This is an interdisciplinary course devoted to the interrelations between ancient texts and archaeological finds and to the mutual contribution of these two fields of study. The course will focus on the writing of the first century CE historian Flavius Josephus, whose contribution to the study of Late Second Temple period Judaea is unquestionable alongside relevant contemporary archaeological finds. Several test cases will be discussed in class in order to demonstrate the methodological challenges and advantages of the combined analysis of the ancient texts and the archaeological finds in search of a clearer understanding of ancient societies and cultures.

Course/Module aims:
The course aims at providing the students with methodological tools for analysis of archaeological remains based on ancient sources, as well as to get them acquainted with major issues concerning the archaeology and material culture of Late Second Temple period Judaea.

Learning outcomes - On successful completion of this module, students should be able to:
1. Identify and properly describe the main characteristics of Josephus' writings, their sources and agenda.
2. Annalise and present orally and in writing
Major questions relating to the material culture and ancient societies in late Second Temple period Judaea, based on relevant archaeological finds and references in Josephus' texts.

Teaching arrangement and method of instruction: Frontal teaching and discussions based on required reading towards classes, two oral presentations, writing a seminar paper by those who are obliged to submit a seminar.

9. Why is there no mention of the complexes of Hebron and Mamra in the writings of Josephus?
10. The use of marble and monolithic columns in Herod's construction projects
11. The cult of the emperor in Judea and the identification of the temple of Augustus and Rome in Banias
