Course/Module description:
The Bar Kokhba Revolt had far-reaching consequences on the history of the Jewish People and the Land of Israel. Due to the scarcity of the historical sources, scholars use studies in the fields of archaeology, numismatics, epigraphy, papyrology, geographical-history, and studies of the Roman army and Empire in order to reconstruct the reasons, stages and suppression of this revolt. These diverse sources will be discussed in the class as well as the methods used by historian to analyze his sources and the archaeologist to interpret his finds. The seminar will be led by an archaeologist and a historian and the revolt will be analyzed from these different points of view.
