תאור כללי של הקורס:
בראשית ימיה של האימפריה, הפרובינקיות שנשלטו על-ידי רומא גבלו לעתים קרובות בשטחים שזכו לאוטונומיה מסוימת מן השלטון הרומי. שטחים אלו, שנוהלו על-ידי שליטים מקומיים פרו-רומיים, מכונים במחקר "ממלכות וסליות". עד ימיו של אוגוסטוס, המוסד של מלכים קליינטים הפך לכלי שגור של השלטון הרומי שאפשר לו לשלוט באופן עקיף על אזורים בהם שלטון ישיר היה בלתי אפשרי או לא רצוי וכן ליצור במזרח אזור חיץ בין האימפריה לבין יריבתה – הממלכה הפרתית. בקורס זה נבחן כיצד מוסד חשוב ונפוץ זה פעל ונשווה בין המקרה המוכר ביותר מן המקורות והממצא הארכיאולוגי של יהודה שנשלטה על-ידי בית הורדוס במאה הראשונה לפסה"נ ובמאה הראשונה לסה"נ לבין עדויות מאזורים אחרים במזרח הקרוב, במזרח התיכון ובבריטניה.

מטרות הקורס:
מטרת הקורס היא לבחון ולהעריך את שלטונם של הורדוס ויורשיו ביהודה בשלהי ימי הבית השני מתוך השוואה למלכים קליינטים אחרים ברחבי האימפריה. בחינה זו תתמקד בתרבות החומרית ובשרידים הארכיאולוגיים.

תוצרי למידה :
בסיומו של קורס זה, סטודנטים יהיו מסוגלים:
1. להכיר את הרקע ההיסטורי-פוליטי של מוסד הממלכות הקליינטיות באימפריה הרומית.
2. לנתח את ההשפעה של מלכי החסות על חדירת התרבות הרומית לאזורי שלטונם.
3. להסביר את הרקע והאינטרסים מאחורי תכניות הבנייה של המלכים הקליינטים.
