Course/Module description:
A general survey of the archaeology of the Levant from the collapse of the Bronze Age civilizations (c. 1200-1150 BCE) to the Babylonian conquest (604-586 BCE)—taking into account the historical sources and long durèe processes in the Middle East and around the Mediterranean

Course/Module aims:
To provide a first glimpse to the material culture of the Iron Age in Israel and its neighbors, including the general socio-economic and geo-political evolution that the region experienced in the end of the second – first half of the first millennium BCE., the main sites, the main categories of material culture (architecture, ceramics, artwork, inscriptions etc.) and attributes of daily life, death, religion, politics, economy and administration—as they appear in archaeological record.

Learning outcomes - On successful completion of this module, students should be able to:
• To engage with the main debates of Iron Age archaeology of the Levant.
• To identify Iron Age attributes in the main categories of material culture..
• To be familiar with the main Iron Age sites (to the level of the stratum).

Attendance requirements(%):
80% & full attendance in field trips

Teaching arrangement and method of instruction: The course consists of 14 1.5 hr. lectures, as well as 4 field trips. It is accompanied by three exercises. Two are online assignments—every student will build two Wikipedia-like web pages; one for an archaeological site and the other about a topic / material culture category. The third exercise will be a presentation of a topic in one of the field trips. In addition, there will be a quiz about the historical sources for the epoch, for which the students are supposed to learn on their own.

Written / Oral / Practical Exam 70 %
Presentation / Poster Presentation / Lecture/ Seminar / Pro-seminar / Research proposal 30 %
