Course/Module description:
Introduction to geographical and spatial aspects of archaeological research in the world and in the Levant, and specifically an introduction to the archaeological surveys (development, goals, methods and applications), and fundamental aspects of spatial analysis in archaeology. The course also includes two days of archaeological surveys and a one-day regional fieldtrip.

Course/Module aims:
• Introduction to spatial archaeology and the geographic analysis of archaeological sites and regions.
• Basic acquaintance with theory and practice of archaeological surveys.
• Understanding current principles of spatial analysis in archaeology.

Learning outcomes - On successful completion of this module, students should be able to:
• To obtain geographic and environmental information of a site/region.
• To conduct a geographic analysis of a site and its environment.
• To gain experience in conducting archaeological surveys.
• To critically evaluate the results of archaeological surveys in the archaeology of the southern Levant.

Attendance requirements(%):
90% (mandatory participation in three days of archaeological survey)

Teaching arrangement and method of instruction: Lectures, Learning via exercising, ‘hands-on’ practice and individual (and group) research.

- Definitions: spatial archaeology and related fields.
- Archaeological survey: history of research, survey methods, survey objectives.
- Spatial analysis in archaeology: geographical and computational analyses.

Additional information:
** During the course, each student will submit several short essays (details will be given during the semester).
*** A two-day educational survey will be conducted in the Upper Galilee. Survey reports will be submitted up to three weeks after the survey dates, in groups (details will be given during the semester).
