Course/Module description:
Close reading in Tab. II of the epic of Gilgamesh(OB and SB). Philological, literary discussion of the epic, against the background of Mesopotamian literature and mythology.

Course/Module aims:
Introduction to the central literary text of ancient Mesopotamia. Improving their reading skills in literary Akkadian.

Learning outcomes - On successful completion of this module, students should be able to:
Students will be able to access a long literary text in Akkadian. Get to know ancient Mesopotamian epic tradition. Get to know the research literature the epic of Gilgamesh.

Teaching arrangement and method of instruction: Close reading around a table.

Course/Module Content:
The encounter with Enkidu, the fight scene. The meeting with Shamhat, the mating scene. Emotions in Gilgamesh.

A. R. George 2003: The Babylonian Gilgamesh Epic: Introduction, Critical Edition and Cuneiform Texts. Oxford.


A. R. George 2004: Additions to Gilgameš, NABU 2004/49.

Additional Reading Material:
will be given during the course.

Grading Scheme :
Essay / Project / Final Assignment / Referat 90 %
Active Participation / Team Assignment 10 %
