Course/Module description:
Introduction to the genre of Laments in Akkadian literature. Close reading of three laments from the Old Babylonian period.

Course/Module aims:
Getting to know literary texts in Akkadian, familiarization with the Akkadian literary system, its poetic style, and typical language. Using advanced research tools (traditional and digital).

Learning outcomes - On successful completion of this module, students should be able to:
Students will get familiar with literary texts in Akkadian, especially with laments - a literary genre that is also known from the Bible. Their ability to deal with literary Akkadian text will certainly be better.

Teaching arrangement and method of instruction: Seminar. Close reading with open discussion.

Course/Module Content:
Different genres in Akkadian literature.
Laments in Akkadian.
Comparison between Akkadian laments and Biblical laments.
A reading of three laments:
CT 44, 21 &eq; SEAL 1814, including its later duplicate published by Lambert, AfO 19.
