Course/Module description:
Deepening the description of the basic structures of modern Spanish and issues on which the research has focused in recent years (see Course content) will constitute the main agenda of this course.

Course/Module aims:
Acquisition of new skills for the comprehension of texts in Spanish, the extension of the knowledge that students already have about the principles that govern the structure of Spanish, as well as the confrontation with structures, which usually lead to ambivalence or raise doubts in their Interpretation, are among the aims of this course, precisely intended to overcome such problems by reading articles and academic chapters and discussing them in class, among others.

Learning outcomes - On successful completion of this module, students should be able to:
• Understand texts of simple until intermediate difficulty.
• Identify the common morphological forms as well as some syntactic patterns, and translate a text with the aid of a dictionary and a grammar.
• Demonstrate knowledge of the phonological, morphological, and syntactic rules governing Spanish.
• Be able to critically analyze and discuss academic readings on topics related to the Spanish language.

Teaching arrangement and method of instruction: Lectures, reading, practical exercises, analysis of texts, linguistic glosses, debate, a presentation per participant, a final essay/project work or seminar work.

• Basic structures of Spanien standard Spanish.
• Phonetics and phonology, morphology.
• Structure of the Noun Phrase.
• Structure of the Verb Phrase.
• The simple sentence.
• Personal A.
• Clitics on Spanish.
• Inalienable Possession in Spanish.
• SER and ESTAR.
• Passive voice.
• Passives and SE constructions.
• Relative clauses and pronouns, et cetera.
• Word order and information structure.
An overview in the geographical varieties of Spanish in Spanien.
