Course/Module description:
The course will be divided into two chapters. In the first chapter we will discuss the historical-geographical changes that occurred in Israel in the late Ottoman period, 1799-1917. The second chapter will deal with the period between the beginning of the British Mandate and the establishment of Israel, from 1917 to 1948.

Course/Module aims:
The aim of the course is a general study of the historical-geographical changes that occurred in Israel and Jerusalem from the early modern period (1799) to the War of Independence (1948).

Learning outcomes - On successful completion of this module, students should be able to:
Upon successful completion of this module, students will be familiar with:
- The fundamentals of historical geography thought and development.
- The formative events leading up to the historical geography changes in Eretz-Israel&eq;Palestine, from the late Ottoman period and up to the War of Independence.
- The various resources from which we can learn about historical geography changes within the research area.

Course/Module Content:
The first section will focus on the late Ottoman period (1917-1799), as follows:
1. The essence of the historical-geographic study method; When was the beginning of the modern period in Israel?; Eighty years of the 19th century and their division into chronological stages.
2. Sources for researching Eretz-Israel&eq;Palestine in the late Ottoman period; Western travelers’ literature.
3. Penetration of the Western world, the Ottoman constitutional reforms and their implications; The beginning of modernization and growth of cities in Eretz-Israel&eq;Palestine.
4. The population of Jerusalem and Eretz-Israel&eq;Palestine at the beginning of the modern period and the formation of the "old" Jewish settlement.
5. The beginning of the Zionist movement; First Aliyah; Establishment of early settlements; Baron Edmond de Rothschild; J.C.A; General transformations in Eretz-Israel&eq;Palestine.
6. Zionist political activity; Second Aliyah; The Palestine Office; Young Turks.
The second section will discuss the British Mandate period (1917-1948):
1. Jerusalem and Eretz-Israel&eq;Palestine at the beginning of the British Mandate; The Balfour Declaration, the British occupation, martial law, the British Mandate for Palestine, First High Commissioner period - Herbert Samuel 1917/18-1925/6).
2. The organization of the Zionist movement, The Jewish Agency and the Jewish settlement in Eretz-Israel&eq;Palestine in the 1920s, Third and Fourth Aliyah; The period of High Commissioner Lord Plumer (1928-1929).
3. The development of the Zionist-Palestinian conflict; 1929 Palestine riots and the effects of the high commissioner John Chancellor period (1929-1931) on the conflict.
4. The first half-decade of the 1930s as the constitutive period of the development of the Jewish settlement in Eretz-Israel&eq;Palestine. The expansion of the Jewish settlement; The first period of Arthur Wauchope (1931-1935) as high commissioner.
5. The Arab Revolt (riots) 1936-1939, political developments, Peel Commission; Woodhead Commission (Palestine Partition Commission); White Paper of 1939; Second World War 1939-1945.
6. The Jewish Resistance period and the War of Independence– Settlement foundation and the political outcome; Jerusalem in focus.
