Course/Module description:
The course discusses the climate system, its main processes and various atmospheric phenomena.

Course/Module aims:
Basic familiarity with the climate system, main atmospheric processes and atmospheric phenomena

Learning outcomes - On successful completion of this module, students should be able to:
Understand basic atmospheric processes, synoptic-scale weather systems and the climate system at large.

Teaching arrangement and method of instruction: Lectures course instructor and teaching assistants.

Course/Module Content:
1. Introduction: the climate system, meteorology and climatology, composition and structure of the atmosphere
2. Pressure and temperature in the atmosphere
3. Effects of solar radiation on the atmosphere
4. Humidity in the atmosphere
5. Atmospheric stability and temperature lapse rates
6. Atmospheric dynamics: pressure maps, high and low pressure systems, forces affecting air flow.
7. Synoptic systems: wind flow around barometric lows and highs, mechanisms generating lows and highs
8. Meso-scale wind flow, sea breeze, topographical effects on wind, cloud formations
9. Global-scale wind flow, ocean-atmosphere feedbacks
10. Global climate, temperature and rainfall distributions
11. Climate change
