תאור כללי של הקורס:
הסמינר יציע סקירה מקיפה של נושאי הדיון והמחקר, המודרניים והקדומים כאחד, הנסובים סביב הרפובליקה הרומית. חומרי הקריאה והדיונים בסמינר יתמקדו בשלושה נושאי חתך מרכזיים:
א. האופן בו סופרים והוגים קלאסיים מימי הרפובליקה והקיסרות המוקדמת ואילך, הבינו והמשיגו את זכר הרפובליקה הישנה, וכיצד היא הצטיירה בכתביהם.
ב. כיצד שיטת השלטון המונרכי שביסס אוגוסטוס קיסר הוצגה כלא פחות מ-"לידה מחדש" של הרפובליקה המקורית, דרך הבניית הזיכרון הלאומי הרומי ורעיונות בני רוח התקופה.
ג. כיצד הרפובליקה מצטיירת בעיני המחקר המודרני, מראשיתו במאה ה-19 ועד ימינו. למן הגישה הוותיקה והמסורתית, לפיה הרפובליקה נתפסה כמערכת אוליגרכית שנשלטה בידי מספר מצומצם של אליטות, ועד לגישה העדכנית הגורסת שהרפובליקה הושתתה על מערכת דמוקרטית מיסודה, מתוקף מקומו המרכזי של העם הרומי כ"ריבון" וסמכותן הרבה של אספותיו.
הסמינר יקיף שורת נושאים, כגון המסורת ומערכת הערכים הרומית, האצולה הסנאטורית על מלחמותיה ותככיה הפנימיים, שפת הסמלים של טקסי הרפובליקה הציבוריים והדתיים, המונומנטים, האדריכלות והטופוגרפיה האורבנית של רומא.

מטרות הקורס:
תלמידי הקורס יתוודעו לדיונים ההיסטוריים וההיסטוריוגרפיים העוסקים בטיבה של הרפובליקה הרומית, לצד תולדות הגישות השונות להגדרתה ולחקר תולדותיה למן העת העתיקה ועד ימינו. הם ילמדו להבחין בין הנחות הייסוד אודות הרפובליקה ומוסדותיה, שמקורן בהיסטוריונים, סופרים ופוליטיקאים בני תקופות שונות, אשר הושפעו משיקוליהם האישיים והפוליטיים, לבין העובדות הממשיות המעטות שיש בידי המחקר. התלמידים יכירו את היסודות הרעיוניים שעמדו בבסיס החברה הרומית ויבינו כיצד אלה השפיעו על עיצוב הזירה הפוליטית, המוסדית והתרבותית של הרפובליקה. הם כמו כן יבינו כיצד מקור הידע שלנו על הפוליטיקה הרומאית הוא ברעיונות מופשטים, עשייה מדינית ואידיאולוגיה חברתית של עתות וזמנים שונים. הם ילמדו לפתח מספר מודלים של דמות הרפובליקה, בהתאם לאופן בו היא משתקפת ממקורות ספרותיים וארכיאולוגיים שונים, ויוכלו לפרש את הפתרונות שדמויות היסטוריות נודעות הציעו לתיקון המשבר שפקד את הרפובליקה בערוב ימיה. התלמידים יבינו שרעיון הרפובליקה הרומית היה תוצר של רעיון פוליטי, שהתאים לזמן ומקום מסוימים, אשר המשיך להתעצב ולהיות מוגדר מחדש עם חלוף הזמנים והשתנות החברה הרומית. היות ולמיטב ידיעת המחקר המודרני, קיקרו היה הראשון לחבר חיבור מקיף ותיאורטי על מהות המשטר הרפובליקני, הסטודנטים יכירו בכך שהתפיסות שרווחות בימינו אודות הרפובליקה הישנה עוצבו בעיקר בהשפעת התעמולה של ימי אוגוסטוס קיסר, אשר ניסתה לשוות למשטרו האוטוקרטי אצטלה רפובליקנית. הסטודנטים ינתחו מקורות רלוונטיים, ידונו בבעיות מתודולוגיות, גישות מחקר והערכות היסטוריות אודות הרפובליקה והקיסרות המוקדמת. הם יבינו עד כמה תפיסות מודרניות של המדינה הרומאית תלויות בהקשרים החברתיים והפוליטיים בהם פעלו היסטוריונים שונים. הסטודנטים ילמדו כיצד להשתמש במגוון מקורות ראשוניים (כגון טקסטים, ממצאים ארכיאולוגיים, חפצי אומנות ואדריכלות) בכדי לפרש ולהבין את המערכת הרפובליקנית וערכיה. הם יבדילו בין מיעוט העדויות המוחשיות לבין שפע הנחות השווא שקיימות בנוגע לרפובליקה, על מנת שיבינו את מהות הדיון האקדמי שמתקיים סביבה בדורות האחרונים. בנוסף, הם עשויים לפתח כיווני דיון ומחקר חדשים בנושא זה.

תוצרי למידה :
בסיומו של קורס זה, סטודנטים יהיו מסוגלים:
לבחון ולהעריך את הדיונים ההיסטוריים והפוליטיים על הרפובליקה הרומית.
לנתח מגוון חומרים בכדי ליצור תמונה מוחשית של דמות הרפובליקה.
להעריך את המהימנות, האמינות ומידת הדיוק של סופרים עתיקים ומודרניים העוסקים בשאלות הנידונות.
לעמוד על השינויים הפוליטיים, החברתיים, הצבאיים והכלכליים שפקדו את רומא בעת מעברה מהרפובליקה לקיסרות.
להעריך את משטר הפרינקיפאט של אוגוסטוס קיסר ולדון בבעייתיות שבהגדרתו כמשקם הרפובליקה וערכיה.
לזהות, לתארך ולתאר גישות מודרניות שונות כלפי המערכת הפוליטית הרומית.
לפתח מודלים שונים המסבירים את המערכת הפוליטית והאתוס של הרפובליקה.
להבחין בין עובדות לנראטיבים היסטוריים.
להכיר במגוון הפרשנויות האפשריות למקורות קלאסיים ובהשלכותיהן על השיח המודרני.
להבין את הפונקציונליות שיש לרעיונות של סופרים וחוקרים מודרניים בעבור צרכיהם הפוליטיים.
לעמוד על התלות ההדדית שקיימת בין חשיבה פוליטית עכשווית לפרשנותם של מקורות קדומים בידי חוקרים מודרניים.
להשתמש במידע שנרכש מהרצאות, מקורות ראשוניים מומלצים ומספרות משנית בדיונים שבעל פה ובכתב שיעסקו בנושאים מוסכמים.
