Course/Module description:
Which aspects of its tremendous rich history does Prague try to conceal? Which past events, persons, places and objects does the metropolis disclose and stage? How and why are some parts of the city’s history disguised, while others are accentuated and even celebrated? These are the key questions that will guide this seminar and the week-long stay in the capital of the Czech Republic.
Course/Module aims:
The aim of the excursion is to investigate the hidden and the revealed sides of Prague from the Middle Ages up to the present. In doing so, the seminar looks at the broader picture of historical narratives, myths and realities, of memory and forgetting in Central Europe.
Learning outcomes - On successful completion of this module, students should be able to:
- describe major events in the history of Prague,
- characterize Czech, German and Jewish historical narratives concerning Prague,
- recognize religious (Protestants, Hussites), cultural (Baroque, “Art Deco”) and other heritages that shaped and still shape Prague,
- analyze Prague’s “hidden and disclosed sites”,
- explain national myths and processes regarding “memory and forgetting” in Prague in specific and in Central Europe in general.
