Course/Module description:
A general survey of Roman history from the establishment of the Republic (late 6th century BCE) to the early Principate (first century CE)

Course/Module aims:
Getting acquainted with the basic historic narrative of this period of Roman history and with the general picture of Roman state and society and Roman empire; understanding the processes that led eventually to the collapse of the Republic and to the emergence of the Imperial regime (the Principate)

Learning outcomes - On successful completion of this module, students should be able to:
To describe the main stages and events of the history of the Roman state during the period in question.

To describe and analyze the Republican political system and Roman society under the Republic

To present the main stages of the emergence of the Roman empire, and to explain the connection between external and domestic issues.

To describe and analyze the factors that led eventually to the collapse of the Republican regime and to the emergence of the Principate

To describe and analyze the new dispensation created by Augustus and his imperial policy

To survey the main developments during the rule of Augustus' successors, the first-century Emperors.

Course/Module Content:
1. The Republic and its institutions; Roman Italy, Empire. 2. The Late Republic - basic problems. 3. The Gracchi. 4. From the Gracchi to the First Triumvirate: Marius and the military reform. "the army and the land", the civil wars of the 80s, Sulla's dictatorship and reforms, dismantling of Sulla's ''constitution". 5. From the First Triumvirate to the civil war. 6. Civil war, Caesar's dictatorship; Caesar's assassination. 7. Rome after Caesar's assassination; the rise of Octavianus. 8. From the Second Triumvirate to the Principate; civil wars; the establishment of the Principate; the "first settlement". 9. The Augustan Principate - legal and ideological framework; Augustus and Roman society. 10. Augustus, the Empire and the Army. 11. The imperial family, the problem of succession; the rise of Tiberius. 12. The rule of Tiberius; maiestas trials. 13. Gaius, Claudius, Nero (a general survey).
