Course/Module description:
The course brings together films and historical research in a way that reveals different challenging social, political and cinematic questions. We will explore how filmmakers represent historical events and examine the various cinematic techniques they employ, such as narrative, photography, and archival material, to convey political and social messages in their films. We will also investigate the intriguing question of whether films have the capacity to alter historical narratives.
Simultaneously, we will explore how a critical analysis of films within their historical context can enhance our understanding of historical reality. Moreover, we will address several challenging issues inherent in both filmmaking and historical research, including collective memory, facts and interpretation, the representation of marginalized groups in society, and the ethical considerations surrounding documentary practices.
All films mentioned and screened during the course will be accessible online through the media department. Additionally, we will study films that explore the role of law enforcement, both in Israel and other countries, and analyze the diverse cinematic techniques employed by filmmakers to shape perceptions of the police and their activities within the public sphere.
Course/Module aims:
1. Knowledge of the basic concepts of filmmaking and important stations in the history of cinema
2. Familiarity with the ways historians use films as primary and secondary historical sources
3. Providing tools for analyzing critically films and examining how films seek to shape viewers' historical and political consciousness
4. Discussing ethical issues shared by both filmmakers and historians
Learning outcomes - On successful completion of this module, students should be able to:
1. to be able to recognize the way filmmakers use cinematic language to tell a story
2. to understand the ways historians use films as historical sources
3. examine central historical and political issues represented in films
4. How to critically watch and analyze a movie
