Course/Module description:
In this seminar, we shall discuss questions of collaboration and resistance in WWII and the Pacific War, using three test cases.

In Germany, we shall discuss the anti-Nazi underground in the army, and the motives of Holocaust perpetrators.

In Poland, we'll discuss cases of resistance fighters, rescuers of Jews and on the other hand, collaborators and willing murderers.

In Japanese-occupied China, we'll explore the tricky definitions and the blurry line between brigands, resistance fighters and collaborators.

Course/Module aims:
Our goal is to explore questions of resistance and collaboration: the motives of those who chose a radical way, for good or ill, their moral dilemmas and the blurry line between resistance and collaboration. During the course of the seminar, we will go over some of the major histriographical debates in the fields of Holocaust, WWII, resistance and collaboration studies.

Learning outcomes - On successful completion of this module, students should be able to:
To question the dichotomy between resistance and collaboration in wartime settings, and to obtain a deeper understanding of free will and constraints in extreme circumstances.
