תאור כללי של הקורס:
הקורס יתמקד בהיסטוריה של הקבוצות שחיו בשולי החברה האירופית בעת החדשה המוקדמת, כולל העניים, הנוודים, הפושעים, וקבוצות נוספות של אנשים שנודו מן החברה הממוסדת. תשומת לב תוקדש גם ליחס החברה כלפי קבוצות אלה; לייצוגיהן בספרות ובאומנות של התקופה; לניסיונות השלטונות להתמודד עם תופעות של עוני, פשיעה וסטייה חברתית; וכן לשאלה האם – ובאיזו מידה – ניתן לדבר על תת-תרבות (subculture) או תרבות-שכנגד (counterculture) של עוני ופשיעה בעת החדשה המוקדמת. המקורות, הדוגמאות ומקרי המבחן בקורס יילקחו מן ההיסטוריה של אנגליה וגרמניה.

מטרות הקורס:
מטרת הקורס היא להציג לסטודנטים את תחום ההיסטוריה של העוני והפשיעה באירופה של העת החדשה המוקדמת, ולעזור להם לפתח מיומנות בקריאה ועבודה הן עם מקורות ראשוניים והן עם ספרות מחקר בתחום.

תוצרי למידה :
בסיומו של קורס זה, סטודנטים יהיו מסוגלים:
- להסביר ולהעריך את הגישות והשיטות הקיימות במחקר ההיסטורי של עוני ופשיעה בכלל, וביחס לעת החדשה המוקדמת בפרט
- לתאר את המניעים התאולוגיים והפרגמטיים שעמדו בבסיס הטיפול בעניים בעת החדשה המוקדמת
- להעריך את חשיבותו של המגדר כקטגוריה אנליטית בניתוח היסטוריה של עוני ופשיעה
- להסביר את הקונטקסט והמאפיינים הייחודיים לפשיעה היהודית בעת החדשה המוקדמת, ואת האופן בו נתפסה על ידי הסביבה הלא-יהודית
- לתאר את הייצוגים השונים של עוני ופשיעה בתרבות הגבוהה ובתרבות הפופולרית בעת החדשה המוקדמת, ולהעריך את תפקידם ומשמעותם החברתית והתרבותית

שיטת ההוראה בקורס: חלק קטן מהקורס יועבר בצורה פרונטלית, בעוד רובו יתבסס על קריאה וניתוח של מקורות ראשוניים בידי הסטודנטים, קריאה של ספרות מחקר, ודיון בכיתה.
