Course/Module description:
The development of the military capabilities of the Jewish community in Palestine from the beginning of the Zionist settlement to the !948 War of Independence

Course/Module aims:
1. Describe and analyze the stages of the development of the military capabilities of the Yeshuv.
2. Identify the various factors in analyzing military history.
3. Write a paper on a micro-subject using primary sources.

Learning outcomes - On successful completion of this module, students should be able to:
1.To Describe the course of the development of Jewish military capability in Mandatory Palestine.
2. To identify the various influences on the process.
3.To discuss the various stages and their characteristics.
4.To discern between local and general developments.
5. To analyze a micro-subject.

Teaching arrangement and method of instruction: Lectures.
A semesterial paper which may be used as a draft for the final paper.

1.The reasons for periodization.
2.Hashomer and after.
3. The Jewish Battalions in the British Army.
4. The Third Aliya, the foundation of the Histadrut and of the Hagana.
5.Local defence committees.
6.The 1929 Troubles and their consequences.
7. The development of the Palestinian national movement.
8. The Arab Revolt, the British government and the Yeshuv.
9. The Jewish Settlements Police. The Special Night Squads.
10. The Hagana during the revolt and after.
11. Training and planning in the Hagana.
12. New settelements during the Revolt and after.
13. The Second World War and British preparations for war in the Middle East.
14. The Palmach.
15. The Jewish Brigade in the British Army.
16. Making and purchasing arms.
17. Intelligence, political, military and local.
18. Military thought in the Hagana.
