Course/Module description:
The course will begin with an introduction focusing on ‘what is a group’ and types of groups, an introduction to trauma-informed group therapy, and the topics of secondary traumatic stress and self-care among group therapists. In addition, the course will focus on the following topics both in general and with respect to group work with trauma survivors: advantages and disadvantages of group therapy, the group facilitator’s role, effective communication skills (verbal, non-verbal communication and feedback), group developmental stages, co-facilitation, group roles, conflicts within the group, creativity, and terminating the group process. The course will likewise include a variety of compassion-based contemplative practices for addressing secondary traumatic stress.

Course/Module aims:

Learning outcomes - On successful completion of this module, students should be able to:
-The students will deepen their knowledge of group processes and theories, both in general and with respect to working with groups of trauma survivors
-The students will expand their professional toolbox and deepen their sense of self-efficacy with respect to: a) future facilitation of groups that include trauma survivors, b) compassionately addressing secondary traumatic stress.
