Course/Module description:
The course will explore the development of Friday mosques, from the beginning of Islam through the late Islamic period. It will deal with the main sources of inspiration - internal and external- that influenced the various architectural models, while also discussing their degree of regionality.

Course/Module aims:
The course aims at introducing the student to the main vehicle of Islamization of the landscape: the mosque. It will provide basic and expanded knowledge on the components of the mosque, architectural styles and the various meanings of the architectural-artistic and epigraphic language of choice and their socio-historical context.

Learning outcomes - On successful completion of this module, students should be able to:
The student should be able to identify styles and influences, analyze their respective meanings in the given historical context (not only of mosques), even of mosques not studied in class, including modern ones.

Additional information:
Students can opt counting this course as a course-seminar.
In such a case, there will be an addition of 2 drills during the semester (20% of the final mark of the course) and a seminar paper (evaluation independent from that of course)
