תאור כללי של הקורס:
הסמינר יעסוק בעיקר בהיבטים שונים של ההיסטוריה הצבאית בתקופה שבין ראשית המאה השביעית עד ראשית המאה הט"ז, דהיינו הקמתה של המדינה האסלאמית, עד כיבוש סוריה ומצרים ע"י האימפריה עות'מאנית. בין הנושאים שיידונו: צבא הכיבוש האסלאמיות, צבאות האימפריות האסלאמיות הראשוניות, חדירת התורכים למזה"ת, המלחמה נגד הצלבנים, התהוות המדינה הממלוכית ומלחמתה נגד המונגולים, וראשית הצבא העות'מאנית. בכל תקופה ייבחנו היבטים אסטרטגיים, טקטיים, לוגיסטיים, כלכליים, חברתיים ואידיאולוגיים של צבא ומלחמה. יתקיים גם דיון מקדים על אודות חקר ההיסטוריה הצבאית באופן כללי, וגם על הקופה הפורמטיבית של הצבא המוסלמית, לפני השנה ה-1000 לספה"נ.

מטרות הקורס:
צבא ומלחמה הוא חלק השוב של העולם האסלאמי בימי הביניים, ולכן מטרתו הראשונה הוא לספק סקירה מקיפה ואנליטית של היבטים אלה. שנית, נלמד על הקשר ההדוק בין צבא ומלחמה והיבטים נוספים של החברות מוסלמיות: כלכלה, פוליטיקה, תרבות. לבסוף, נחזק את היכולת לקרוא מקורות ראשוניים ולנתח אותם, ביחד עם המחקרים המודרניים.

תוצרי למידה :
בסיומו של קורס זה, סטודנטים יהיו מסוגלים:
יהיה לתלמיד/ה הבנה רחבה ומעמיקה של היבטים מרכזיים היסטוריה של המזרח התיכון בתקופה הטרום המודרנית. בנוסף גם תתחזק היכולת של התלמיד/ה לקרוא בצורה ביקורתית ולנתח מקורות ראשוניים ומחקרים מודרניים.
