Course/Module description:
The course focuses on the Palestinian-Arab minority in Israel, and explores their status and location in Israel, as well as the main dilemmas regarding the complex and charged relations between the Jewish majority and the Palestinian Arab minority in the State of Israel. The course focuses on the Arab citizens of Israel, their society and unique challenges, and does not deal with the Israeli-Palestinian conflict in general.
The course is divided into four parts. The first part is devoted to a theoretical discussion on the relations between majority and minority while focusing on the Israeli case. The second part is a historical overview of major turning points that affected the status of the Arabs in Israel. The third part focuses on social and political orientations and changes among the Arabs in Israel. The last part is devoted to a discussion on specific issues regarding the relations between Jews and Arabs in the State of Israel. This part will focus mainly on the inherent tension between the definition of Israel as a Jewish democratic state, and its implication on the relations between Jews and Arabs in the country.

The course will introduce the students to the main challenges facing the Palestinian citizens of Israel, as well as the main issues that stand in the core of the relations between the Jewish and Arab citizens of Israel.
