Course/Module description:
The course will examine major turning points in the history of modern Egypt from the 19th century onward. Discussion will focus on political, social and cultural issues that illuminate the transformations Egypt had underwent in the last two centuries.

Course/Module aims:
1. Examining Egypt's political history: as part of the Ottoman Empire; as an autonomous unit ruled by Muhammad Ali Pasha and his successors, as a part of the British Emppire, as a society in national struggle; and as an independent state - under abd al-Nasir, Sadat and Mubarak - and following the Arab Spring.
2. Examining its different revolution: The Urabi revolt, 1919 revolution, the Free Officers Revolution and 2011 Revolution.
3. Examining its economic history: its dependence on cotton during the early decades of the nineteenth century, going through the influx of tourists and consumer goods, Arab socialism, infitah and economic neo-liberalism.
4. Exploring Egypt's foreign relations - with the Ottoman Empire, Great Britain, Sudan, Yemen and Israel.
5. Studying its social history: the different classes in different periods, the slave trade and its abolition, the rise of the middle class, the outcomes of Arab socialism and the the infitah, and the social roots of the Arab Spring.
6. Examining the history of political Islam - from Hasan al-Bana, going through Sayyid Qutb and to the present day.
7. Examining the role of the media in Egypt's history: from the written press, to the radio and cinema - to the internet and especially Facebook.
8. Studying Egypt's cultural history: Music, theatre and cinema.

Learning outcomes - On successful completion of this module, students should be able to:
Examining the interrelations bewteen the political, the economic and the social in the modern history of the Middle East.
